Description: Ginger has a perennial rhizome or stem which creeps and increases in size underground. Roots grow from the bottom of the rhizome and shoots from the upper surface.
Chemical Constituents: Gingerols including gingerol, shagaol, dehyro-gingerdione, gingerdione, paradol, vallinoids, galanals A and B, and zingerone, oleoresins and zingibain. The rhizome of ginger contains pungent vanillyl ketones, including gingerol and paradol, and has been reported to possess strong anti-inflammatory activity as well as anti-tumor promoting properties.
Properties: Ginger acts as a stimulant and carminative and is used in dyspepsia and colic. It is known to have blood thinning and cholesterol lowering properties, due to which it is used in treating heart diseases. Ginger is considered a good remedy for colds. The herb helps in treating arthritis, diarrhea, motion sickness, diabetes, bronchitis and rheumatism. It is a remedy for nausea caused due to sea sickness, morning sickness and chemotherapy.
