English Name: East India Globe Thistle
Description: The herb is annual, erect, well branched plant. The root is tap root and the leaves are sessile are obovate, glandular and dentate. Flowers are purple and acuminate, purplish white, tubular or funnel-shaped, four to five toothed. Fruits are oblong and the plant has a strong aroma which disappears after some time.
Chemical composition: Stems, leaves and flowers have been found to contain fatty acids, phytosterols, a glycoside composed of the alkaloid sphaeranthine and a polysaccharide, β-sitosterol, n-pentacosane, n-triacontanol, stigmasterol, hentri-acontane and β-D-glucoside of β-sitosterol.
Properties: It is an astringent and diuretic. Improves urine flow and reduces size of the prostate.
