Botanical Name: Myristica fragrans Houtt.
Description: M. fragrans ia spreading, medium tolarge sized, aromatic evergeentree usually growing to around 5-13 m in hight, occasionaly 20m. Fruit oval orpyrifom, droping, yelow, smoth, 6-9 cm long with a longitudinal ridge and afleshy usk. When ripe, husk splits into 2halves revealing a purplish-brown, shiny seed surrounded by a leathery red or crimson network of tissue. The shiny, brown seed in side, and the kernel of the seed is the Nutmeg. The brown seed has red cover that makes another spice called Mace.
Chemical Constituents: The major actives are myristic acid, myristicin, terpinen-4-ol, alpha-pinene and safrole. Its main components have been found to be beta-pinene, terpinen-4-ol, alpha-pinene, gamma-terpinene and beta-phellandrene.
Properties: One of the main properties of nutmeg is that it is helpful in stimulating the brain. It provides relief from stress and fuels mental activities as well. It can even boost concentration and assimilation rate as it is supposed to improve blood circulation to brain. Nutmeg proves to be an excellent tonic for the cardiovascular system. It increases the blood circulation and stimulates the heart functions. Nutmeg oil contains eugenol, which has been used in dentistry for toothache relief. The oil is also used as a local message to reduce muscular pain and rheumatic pain of joints. Nutmeg oil has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used as pain reliever. If applied to the affected areas, the oil can treat joint and muscle pains. It can also reduce joint swelling.
